FLO Conscience: Bringing free/libre/open mindsets and methods to all parts of life
11-08, 09:10–09:40 (US/Pacific), Lyceum

Creativity involves copying, transforming, and combining; and people inspire one another and collaborate all the time. But Free/Libre/Open (FLO) methods take things to another level. FLO is prominent in software development and at Wikipedia, but it can apply to so much more.

The FLO Conscious Living (CL) project collects and organizes mental models and practices for living in more healthy, intentional, and ethical ways. It is also an example of using FLO methods in a different context from software. Of course, because the CL ideas themselves apply to everything in life, they can inform software development work too.

As with so many other subjects, our world is overflowing with advice on leadership, communication, wellness, spirituality, and related topics. People keep constantly adding yet more proprietary books, videos, podcasts, and blog posts to the zillions of lifetimes' worth of "content" we already have. FLO methods provide an alternative direction with greater collaborative potential through appropriate understanding, norms, policies, tools, and licenses.

This presentation at SeaGL 2024 is the first major announcement of the FLO Conscious Living project. The FLO-CL project was based primarily on an existing (but non-FLO) compilation. The initial goal was to bring in a better FLO process. Then, as you might expect, FLO evolution led to significant changes in the overall structure and ideas. The keynote will share the story of FLO-CL development and give a brief tour of the current state and future plans.

The current FLO-CL ideas include the process of Attune-Resolve-Review; understanding Context vs Content by bringing conscious awareness to our stories, styles, metaphors, and feelings; and a call to commit to living with presence, responsibility, curiosity, integrity, love & compassion, and vitality. The project is organized into sections for principles and practices. And, being FLO, everyone is invited not only to use the resources but to participate in the ongoing evolution.
