Kaylea Champion

Dr. Kaylea Champion studies how people cooperate to build groovy public goods like GNU/Linux and Wikipedia, including what gets maintained and the risks we face. She is an Assistant Professor in Computing and Software Systems at the University of Washington Bothell, where she teaches about open source, technical management, and software engineering with an emphasis on cybersecurity, evidence, and freedom. Dr. Champion is eager to build connections with communities, including talks at FOSSY, Norwescon, WorldCon, PyConUS, the OpenJS Summit, Wikimania, MozFest, Women in Data Science, PuPPY, DebConf, and SeaGL. A Linux user since 1994, she enjoys tromping through the woods, smashing goblins, conjuring data, and cooking for a crowd.

Today I learned.... The 2026 FLOSS Research Roundup
Kaylea Champion

It's time once again for the 2026 FLOSS Research Roundup!

Hundreds if not thousands of research papers are written every year about open source software! How should we make sense of it all and what does it mean? In this talk, I carefully harvest the latest research from around the world, filter it for real world relevance, shake it up with the latest trends, and then serve it up with a slight dash of attitude.
